Timeline: are you going to use yours for branding?

Have you got your shiny new Facebook timeline yet? Have you thought about how you’re going to use/or not use your timeline for branding? Facebook guru Mari Smith posted a blog article the other day about whether or not business owners, authors and CEO’s should use the timeline banner image to promote their businesses. You can read it here. My opinion is that it really depends on what you do and how you do it. A really creative banner which happens to mention what you do is probably fine. An ad offering a discount to Facebook friends or fans… not so much! That feels a bit too spammy to me. I’ve had my timeline for a couple of months now and love how I can easily find old posts. I also like the subscribe feature which gives people I’m not friends with a way to connect with me. I have, however, set up my posting defaults and past post defaults to only post to a select group of people that I call friends or family. So, that ensures more personal posts don’t make it into acquaintances and subscriber-only newsfeeds. So have a think about how you want to use/not use your timeline to compliment your business branding while you explore the new Timeline over the holidays.

Speaking of holidays. I am taking a break from blogging next week so I can tend to my very neglected garden and spend some time with hubby who is taking the week off work. Our Facebook wall will be open to any business to post on any day but our rule about only posting twice per week and once per day still applies. Have a safe and happy holiday season!

Today is all about business services and other professional services, employment, graphic design and markets on our page wall.
